The posted Canadian Facebook user stats are intriguing. At first glance it seems that one quarter to one third of residents in every province are registered on Facebook. I do not totally trust my rusty math skills or knowledge of provincial census data to make that conclusion. However, a comparison of Facebook stats by province with census data released by Stats Can last October proved my hypothesis to be fairly accurate.

For Ontario, Alberta and BC, Facebook users hover around the 30 per cent mark. Nova Scotia boasts the highest percentage at 38 per cent. The remaining provinces enter in at around 25 per cent. Quebec, however, is an exception to the rule. Only 12 per cent of les Francophones are on Facebook.

Is social media a fad? I’m not sure if we have ever seen a craze that was previously adopted by almost every age group in this country. Facebook is not only being used by teens that embrace privacy invaders like instant messenger, web cams and online video games, it is also being used by their parents. Heck, possibly even their grandparents.

A social medium like Facebook can be a powerful way to get messages to target audiences and gain product awareness. A giant in consumer board games recently asked Facebook to take down an application that used their popular game. The particular game has surged in popularity, due directly to its exposure on Facebook. Social media has given an old game a fresh face and millions of new users. Many corporations are eager to get exposure like that, and are looking for ways to crack into Facebook. This corporation has hit gold, and unfortunately is trying to shoot the messenger.

Well put Meagan. So smart to point the Scrabble story in the face of a company who would quiver at Facebook.

Talk about revitalization opportunity. When is the last time scrabble has been discussed so much amongst consumers? In the world of xbox, wii and playstation, you have to wonder what is going on in their heads?

Would love to hear from Hasbro Mattel... Are you listening?

Since when did the CMA become the mouthpiece for just Facebook? I can get those same demo figures from any number of services. Looks like objectivity is becoming an issue, even with stuffy orgs like the CMA.

Liam,

We'd be interested in stats from additional sources - no need to shoot the messenger on this one. I don't believe the author is purposefully promoting the use of Facebook, but rather, pointing out the power of social media.
