Monsters
Recently, Monster has been promoting their services from an interesting angle. As opposed to taking the traditional/boring route of "use our site and you'll get hired", Monster plays up the #1 reason why people switch jobs.
If you guessed 'low salary' (like me) - wrong. If you guessed 'not enough vacation' - wrong again. If you have seen their ads, it's because of a good boss or lack thereof. A Gallup poll of 1 million US employees revealed that most quit their jobs because their bosses were real monsters. Pardon the pun.
Ironically, 9 out of 10 managers believed their staff left because of greater salary according to a Harvard Management Update, June 1998. Talk about a disconnect.
What is alarming is that in spite of the impending staffing shortage that will hit all industries in the coming years, many managers have not yet wised up. Much less most companies or HR departments for that matter. Little do they know the light at the end of the tunnel is actually an oncoming express train.
What a shame. Perhaps Abraham Lincoln was right when he said "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character give him power."
On a lighter note, this video flagged by Bryan Person is a funny spoof. Perhaps this overtakes the 'lousy boss' as the #1 reason people switch jobs...
